Setting Career Goals as a Contractor

by Eric Hanson, Backend Developer at Clean Systems Consulting

No promotion cycle. No manager checking your progress.
As a contractor, your career only moves if you decide where it’s going.

Decide What You Actually Want

It sounds obvious, but most contractors skip this part.

  • Do you want higher rates or more stable work?
  • Do you prefer deep expertise or broader skills?
  • Are you optimizing for income, freedom, or reputation?

Without a clear target, every opportunity looks equally important—and that’s the problem.

Think in Milestones, Not Titles

There’s no “Senior” promotion waiting for you.

  • Replace titles with measurable milestones
  • Examples:
    • Reach a specific hourly rate
    • Work with certain types of clients
    • Deliver more complex projects independently

Progress becomes real when you can measure it, not label it.

Align Work With Your Goals

Not every project moves you forward.

  • Ask: “Does this help me get closer to my goal?”
  • Avoid projects that only pay but don’t build relevant experience
  • Balance short-term income with long-term direction

Every project is either progress or distraction. Choose carefully.

Track Your Growth Yourself

No one is documenting your achievements—you have to do it.

  • Keep a simple record of:
    • Projects completed
    • Problems solved
    • Skills gained
  • Review it regularly to see patterns

If you don’t track it, you’ll underestimate how much you’ve grown.

Adjust as You Learn

Your goals will evolve—and that’s normal.

  • Revisit your direction every few months
  • Drop goals that no longer make sense
  • Double down on what’s working

Flexibility isn’t lack of focus—it’s smart adaptation.

Don’t Wait for Permission

This is the biggest shift from traditional careers.

  • You don’t need approval to raise your rates
  • You don’t need a title to take on bigger challenges
  • You don’t need validation to change direction

As a contractor, you’re both the employee and the decision-maker.

Closing thought:
Setting career goals as a contractor isn’t about climbing a ladder—it’s about building your own path, step by step, with intention.
